A University Student's Experiences of the COVID-19 Changes

We are interested to find out how COVID-19 has impacted the young people we work with. We have asked students a series of questions to gain an insight into their experiences so far.

Today, we have spoken to a student who is studying BA English Literature with Creative Writing at University.

How are you finding learning online? Has it been easy to adapt to?

I am finding it really difficult, as it’s hard to stay focussed and finish work on time, even though I’ve been at home for quite a while now, and in theory, had plenty of time! There is no possibility of discussing anything in-depth, as time online is limited, and not everyone is necessarily present. Time is very limited even in ‘normal’ term time, now even more so.

Are you structuring your day like a school day (e.g. learning 9am-3pm) or are you learning at your own pace with flexible hours?

Not having had the routines of university life to work around has been disruptive to my concentration levels, partly because I am worrying about the pandemic and what the future might look like, and partly because I am Autistic and changes like this cause me a lot of anxiety. I feel frustrated and disconnected with the course, we haven’t been able to cover all of the module content. It’s hard to know if I’m going in the right direction without confirmation, as there is no one to ask. I realize it’s difficult for the tutors too, everyone is doing their best. I’m trying to structure my day, but it’s hard to concentrate and easy to get distracted. Time disappears!

What do you do in your spare time during lockdown?

I read a lot…books, Tumblr, blogposts on youtube, & watch obscure musicals! I have plans to do some dressmaking baking, and a pile of books to tackle over the summer. Oh, and snuggle the cats!

How do you feel about the lack of student interaction?

Although I don’t do a lot of socializing normally, I do miss seeing my friends. I don’t Skype or FaceTime as I find that very challenging and stressful.

Has the pandemic changed your plans for your future education?

I hope not. As long as I can maintain my grades during all of this, I would like to do an MA.
