Beyond the Barracks

Beyond the Barracks is a collaborative programme between Inspiring Choices and York St John University’s widening participation team, working with military service children in York and North Yorkshire.

The aim of the programme is to help learners recognise the skills they have, including those they have gained from their experiences of being a military service child, inform students of the variety of pathways available to them after they leave school and build skills to help them reach their future goals.

Some of the themes we cover in the project include:

• Post 16 Pathways
• Apprenticeships
• Budgeting
• Study Skills
• CV writing
• Life as a Military Service Child

The project concludes with a campus visit to York St John University, and the students partake in a subject taster session with a York St John University academic. Student mentors from York St John University are present throughout the project and can also offer an insight into student life.
