1. Could you tell us your name and your job title?

Alex Hargreaves, Outreach Coordinator

2. Could you tell us about your background (i.e., past education / jobs)?

I was born in Buxton Derbyshire (where the water comes from) and grew up in the peak district before moving to Leeds to study English Literature and Theatre Studies at University. Like many young people, I had no idea what I wanted to do when I graduated, so I moved to London to start a safe and steady career in the famously reliable theatre industry. After working as a freelance actor musician for eight years, I decided to go back to studying, so returned to Yorkshire to study an MA in Victorian Literature and Culture at the University of York. I loved it so much that I decided I to share my enthusiasm for Higher Education and applied to join the Inspiring Choices team. Alongside my work here, I still work as a freelance writer, performer and co-artistic director of Notice this Notice Theatre Company.

3. What is your favourite part of your job?

Creating and delivering new workshops and activities. I have met many remarkable young people across the county, and being able to share my passion for the arts with so many talented young people has been a real highlight for me.

4. What one piece of advice would you give to someone looking at their future education

Make sure you study something that interests you. Higher education is intense, and enjoying your subject can be the difference between a good experience and a bad one. Also, if you aren't sure you're ready to go to university at 18, that's ok! There's no harm in waiting a few years and going back later on.

5. What is your favourite film or book

My favourite movie(s) is the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I watch the extended editions at least once a year and they always make me cry. Controversially, however, they are not my favourite books. My favourite book is Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome. No wait! The Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith. No sorry I've changed my mind again! The Count of Monte Cristo... oooh there's too many to choose from!

6. If you were an animal, what type of animal do you think you’d be

A Goat. They love the mountains, look like they don't take themselves very seriously, and have great facial hair.
