Here is the next installment in our "A Week In The Life Of" series!

Hello! What is your name and where are you from?

Hello, my name is Lisa and I'm from Scarborough.

Where do you work and what is your job?

I am a Primary School Teacher.

Please can you tell us a little more about where you work and the industry it is in?

Education. I currently teach children ages 5-7 (years 1&2). I am subject lead for Spanish, Reading and Phonics.

What is a typical day like in your job?

Busy busy really enjoyable. Being organised is key to the job.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy watching children make progress in their learning and overcoming things that have been barriers to them. I also love watching children having fun learning and also the amount of learning and development you do yourself within the job.

Did you go to college or university? If so, what did you study and where?

I went to Scarborough 6th Form college, where I studied Biology at AS Level and Psychology and Health and Social Care double award at A Level. I then went to the University of Hull, Scarborough Campus and did a degree in Educational Studies with Early Childhood Development and the did a PGCE (ages 3-7) with an Early Childhood Development.

Why did you choose to study this subject/s?

I was interested in working with children and was fascinated how young children learn, develop and grow

Does your degree relate to your job? If so, how?

Very relatable. Knowing how young children learn is important, knowing about previous policies in Education helps understand how education today came to be amongst other things.

How has the COVID-19 lockdown affected your job?

I had to work from home for a number of months but got to go on-site on a 3-week rota for 3 days to look after key worker children. I also got to get jobs done that needed doing within my subject leadership.

Please can you tell us about your "Career Journey"?

I first did work experience in a nursery when I was at school and that was when I knew I wanted to work with children. I did work experience in a school whilst studying for my degree. I also held down a part-time job in a supermarket whilst studying. I did think about working in a nursery but decided teaching would be more suitable for me.

What would be your one piece of advice for someone who is looking into the job sector you work in?

This job is great, if you want to work as part of a team and want to celebrate others succeeding. You also need to make sure you have great organisational skills so you can teach at your best but also have a good work-life balance. It’s definitely a job that is rewarding!
